Torah Project Q&A

Why do we need a new Torah?

The Torah is at the heart of the Jewish people, the most important document in Judaism, studied throughout the ages. We cherish the Torah, and deeply believe in the mitzvah of teaching its lessons “diligently unto our children.” In writing our own, new Torah with our scribe, we literally practice the mitzvah of l’dor v’dor, passing our traditions from “generation to generation.”

Two of our existing Torahs are either too large or too heavy for some of our B'nai Mitzvah kids and older adults.  The new Torah is designed to be lighter in weight and have larger letters.   This will make it more accessible for all.

Will I really write a Torah scroll?

Yes, but not to worry about your own handwriting or whether you can do this.  You will help write a letter in our Torah, and complete the 613th mitzvah by touching the hand of our Soferet, (scribe) Linda Coppleson as she writes the letter.

Who can participate and how?

Everyone can participate.   Click here  for available  scribing dates or call the temple office and they will schedule a date for you.

How much can I write and can I choose what is written?

Each person/group will write at least one letter, which is determined by what has already been written as your special day arrives. It is exciting to find out what part of the Torah you will be participating in writing!

How can I/we help support the writing of the Torah?

There are a variety of dedication levels, making it possible for everyone to find a meaningful section of Torah to dedicate.  A full listing of dedication opportunities is available.  Click Here .  Recognition and acknowledgment will be made for gifts received.  Optional payment plans will be available for larger amounts.

Do I have to make a pledge to be able to scribe in the Torah?

No. We encourage all members and families to scribe regardless of financial ability.

How much should I give?

We ask that you give as much as you can, but always at a level that is comfortable for you and your family.

How do I dedicate my child's Torah portion if I don't know what it will be?

You can make the donation to dedicate a B'nai Mitzvah portion now, but identify the specific portion later, when you know the specific date. Your donation will be honored. When the specific portion is identified, a personalized certificate will be completed and presented to you.

How will the money that is raised be used?

The money raised so far has paid off our mortgage!  This frees up funding to provide programming and member support.  Next, we will upgrade our classrooms and teaching facilities.   Finally, we want to continue building our reserves to support us for years to come.

How many people can join us when we meet with our Soferet, Linda Coppleson?

A family, Havarah - all are welcome.  If you think a group is too large, please contact us.

How much time will I/we have with the the Soferet, Linda Coppleson?

Each group/person will have approximately 10 minutes to scribe with her.  During this time, she will explain the meaning of the letter and portion you helped scribe.

How many pictures will be given to me when I scribe?

One photo will be taken during the time that you scribe with us.  This is our gift to you.  Due to time constraints, we will not be able to take different poses or configurations of those who scribe.  One photo per group.   Please keep in mind, trained volunteers, not professionals, will be taking these pictures, so we cannot guarantee the quality of the photos.

Does my Torah dedication affect my yearly Pillar gift or my High Holy Day pledge?

Your Torah dedication is not credited towards Pillar or High Holy Day giving because the Torah project is a capital campaign, intended for a single use opportunity.  Pillar and High Holy Day giving is a sustaining gift for our annual operating budget.

May I give stock and/or IRA contributions?

Yes, we are set up to receive any kind of financial donation. Contact our Executive Director Aliza Goland for details.
